halloween workshop #2

Hello everyone,

It has already been a year since I held my first wagashi workshop! My first one took place last October, where we made Halloween sweets.

Now a year later, I just held a mini wagashi workshop on October 6, also themed around Halloween, but this time featuring a slightly different design of a jack-o’-lantern.

I taught wagashi in a mini wagashi workshop as part of an international exchange community event.

Looking back at my blog from last year, I remember that there were 8 participants at that time, but this time over 40 people joined!

This is the largest number of participants I’ve ever had in one of my wagashi classes!

Of course, I was able to run the class smoothly thanks to my wife and friends who helped as assistants.

I was a bit nervous with such a large group for the first time, but I focused on teaching as I usually do and managed to stay calm.

To be honest, I hadn’t finished preparing the ingredients by the day before, so I hurriedly made the dough on the morning of the event.

The kitchen at the venue had a stronger flame than I’m used to, which made it challenging to prevent burning the sweets.

Well, in the end managed to handle it with my intuition and experience as a wagashi chef (haha).

I was so busy with preparations before the event started that I couldn’t greet everyone who participated, and I’m really sorry about that.

Once the wagashi workshop began, everyone was serious yet having fun as they worked, and I felt relieved, thinking, “I’m glad I did this.”

After we finished making the sweets, we took photos with a Halloween backdrop alongside the treats, and then finished up with tasting time! ♪

The main takeaway from this time is that, since there were more participants than usual, those in the back couldn’t see my hands moving well. I tried to show the process up close at each table, but it slowed things down. I realized I need to get creative, perhaps by using a camera to show my hands on a display or providing printed instructions.

Next, I’d like to try hosting a dorayaki party.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated this time! Let’s enjoy more fun wagashi-making sessions together!
